The Damned

Le origini dei Damned, uno dei gruppi fondamentali della prima ondata punk inglese, si fanno risalire ai
London SS, un complesso che non giunse mai in sala di incisione e che vide l'avvicendarsi di membri futuri dei Clash e di Generation X.
Rat Scabies, il chitarrista Brian James e il bassista Ray Burns, alias
Captain Sensible, intorno alla metà degli anni '70 sono i componenti dei Subterraneans che nel luglio 1976, quando l'ex-becchino,
Dave Vanian entra a far parte del gruppo, diventano Damned.
Nello stesso anno partecipano al celebre 100 Club Festival e scoperti da Nick Lowe,
in ottobre, pubblicano il loro primo singolo, il ruvido New Rose.
Nei primi mesi del 1977, esce il secondo singolo Neat Neat Neat e il loro
primo album Damned Damned Damned (Stiff, 1977) che li consacra a tal punto da essere invitati al CGBG 's di New York.
Nello stesso anno, viene rilasciato il mediocre Music For Pleasure, il cui produttore è Nick Mason, batterista dei Pink Floyd.
Dopo la realizzazione dell'album, James, autore delle musiche, abbandona il gruppo per costituire i Lords of the New Church.
Personaggio chiave dei Damned diventa ora Captain Sensible e il gruppo, sotto di
lui, partorisce il psichedelico Machine Gun Etiquette (1979) e
alcuni singoli di successo I Just Can't Be Happy Today (1978), Love Song
(1978), Noise Noise Noise (1979), Smash It Up (1979).
Nel 1980, pubblicano un doppio album, Black Album, da molti considerato il loro lavoro migliore, più melodico ed elettronico.
Due anni dopo l'inizio del declino.
Dopo Strawberries (1982), un album trascurabile, i Damned
compiono una virata verso sonorità più commerciali, melodiche e psichedeliche
con Phantasmagoria (1985).
Dopo il fiasco di Anything (1986), il gruppo si scioglie, per ritornare nel 2001 con Patricia Morrison (ex
Gun Club e Sisters of Mercy) al basso.
Con l'inaspettato ritorno di Capitain Sensible, che aveva lasciato il gruppo per una carriera più dance, i Damned pubblicano sotto la Nitro, etichetta gestita da Dexter Holland degli Offspring, illustre fan
del gruppo, Grave Disorder.
Uno dei meriti dei Damned fu quello di registrare il primo disco punk-rock in Inghilterra,
New Rose, pochi mesi dopo i Ramones; l'altro, fu quello di aver reinterpretato la violenza punk in chiave ironica. Un gruppo che con il punk aveva in comune soltanto un certo tipo di sonorità , ma che se ne discostava nettamente per quanto riguardava l'ideologia nichilista.
